Software Defined Radio
« on: August 30, 2017, 12:20:59 AM »
Hey All,

I recently got a software defined radio 'kit' (basically a dongle and aerial) and have been messing around with it a bit. (https://www.rtl-sdr.com/buy-rtl-sdr-dvb-t-dongles/)

So far just been able to tune into Dublin Airport and a few other signals thanks to this boards thread http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055087844

If anyone wants to have a go let me know.

It reminds me of this http://youarelistening.to/

Definitely interested.

Was thinking about buying one of those dongles recently. Are they restricted to certain frequencies?

I miss radio...

With this particular kit there are limitations. From the little I've looked into it the more you spend the more you can do/get. etc

As I said in my previous post I got it through the SDR site in the States from China (6-7 weeks later about 30 euros!).

I'm sure I could have gotten it cheaper and quicker in Dublin/Ireland/UK..laziness/impulse buy on my part.

Cliona Harmey has done work with SDR as have Critical Engineers (They ran a workshop on last month).

I used http://gqrx.dk/ for software on my mac. Next stop (when I get around to it) will be migrating over to a PI.

A very interesting article indeed.

Although finding it hard not to imagine some ranking officer from the FSB giving a 'Pump up the Jam' order.

All of this fascinates me (for technical and other reasons):

'GPS is made up of three parts: 24 functioning satellites orbiting 12,550 miles above Earth; monitoring stations on the ground; and receivers in individual devices. For a device to connect to the GPS network, it needs to be able to see at least four of the US-government-owned satellites, although in many cases they communicate with up to eight.'

More info on it here: http://www.gps.gov/systems/gps/

Also, love the term 'Dead Reckoning' !
